The court of Pope Leo X was famous for its excess, frivolity and impropriety. In an example of the excess that had become commonplace, the pleasure-loving pontiff kept a menagerie of wild birds and exotic animals, his favorite of which was Hanno, a young white elephant from India, brought to Rome as a gift from the King of Portugal.
Everybody loved the Pope’s pacuderm and were saddened by his unexpected
illness and death. The public so loved Hanno the elephant that the outcry
of sorrow prompted artist Raphael to design a memorial fresco and the
Pope himself to compose Hanno’s epitaph.
Our man Aretino, who had a long and well-found disrespect for the Vatican
and politicians in general, seized the opportunity to compose and publish
Hanno’s last will and testament. One stipulation of Aretino’s
mock will was the bequeathing of the beast's genitals to one of the hornier
Cardinals of the time.
